Types of Language Learners

According to a study, there are four types of learners. This is also applicable to learners of ESL or English as Second Language and it is important for an English language tutor to be familiar with them.

Concrete learners are those who like doing games, audio visual activities, and even pair work as means of learning.

Analytical learners are those learners who prefer to use structural methods and texts as well as verbal linguistic means and corrections.

Communicative learners are those who are more interested in simulations, role plays, and realia.

Authority-oriented learners on the other hand are those who need a more thorough explanation for every lesson, who take great notes, and often resort to manipulatives.

Apart from the types of learners that an English tutor has to be familiar with, there are also different classroom types. All of them are listed below along with strategies on how to teach all of them:

The Learning Disabled

This is the poorly prepared student since primary school and his or her knowledge in English is underdeveloped. This kind of learner may be deficient in their knowledge of their first language. It is important for the tutor to be extra patient and to make use materials that adapt to their preferred learning styles.

The LEP or Limited English Proficiency Learner

This type of student has learned by piggy-backing off the learning abilities of a more proficient classmate. The tendency is that the tutor has a basic level learner in an intermediate or higher level class. That’s why it’s important to conduct remedial work outside of the usual class hours. It would be better for this type of student to have tutoring sessions, workshops, and even extra classes outside the usual class hours.

Teacher’s Pet

This is the learner who gets the homework done and his or her seatwork is almost perfect every time. And he or she raises his or her hands each time in class during discussion. The teacher’s pet is the teacher’s dream. For this learner, it is better to give him or her extra assignments and activities. They are the ones who finish ahead of the rest.
